This is a Byzantine-era castle built on a sheer cliff 300 metres above the sea on the west coast, near Palaeokastritsa. It was the westernmost defensive outpost of the Byzantine Empire, and later of the Despotate of Epirus, to which Corfu belonged until 1267. It was erected in the early 12th century, when the old castle (now the Monastery of Palaeokastritsa) had to be transferred to a safer defensive position. The trek to its top may be tiring, but the view will make up for the toil.
